The view from our hostel which was located in an area called Getsemani. African people brought as slaves used to live in this neighborhood.
The city does have a sorted past and at one point it was the city most associated with pirates in the Caribbean. It was also a major trading port, especially for gold and silver from the mines in the New Granada and Peru. Precious metals were loaded in Cartagena on the galleons bound for Spain via Havana. Cartagena was also a slave port and this city, along with Veracruz, Mexico, were the only cities authorized to trade African slaves. - Jay
